Different types of commands and controls

A control feature can be driven:

  • from the app locally (via Bluetooth Mesh),

  • from the app remotely (via the WiFi/Bluetooth Mesh gateway),

  • from a command feature bound to it (e.g. a switch),

  • from a scenario,

  • from a voice assistant.

📋 Requirement: every control feature can be driven from the mobile application in local control, directly over the Bluetooth Mesh network, with no gateway.

📋 Requirement: every control feature can be driven from the mobile application remotely, through a WiFi gateway bound to the home.

📋 Requirement: every control feature can be driven from a command feature bound to it, provided the two are compatible.

📋 Requirement: every control feature can be driven from a scenario.

Local control

Controllers can be driven from the App within the home itself.

To transmit its orders to the network, the App must be able to connect directly to at least one product with the Proxy Node role.

To be functional, a mesh network must include at least one Proxy Node product.

Phone requirements

For local control to work, the phone must meet certain conditions:

  • have a Bluetooth Low Energy module (present on almost all recent smartphones),

  • have Bluetooth enabled in the system settings,

  • be within radio range of the Bluetooth Mesh network,

  • use an App version compatible with local control,

  • have granted the necessary system permissions (Bluetooth and, depending on the Android version, location).

Android

  • Android 12 and above: Bluetooth runtime permissions (scan, connect) must be granted to the App.

  • Android 11 and below: Bluetooth scanning historically depends on the phone’s location permissions and location service — if disabled, no device can be detected.

iOS

  • Bluetooth must be enabled and permission granted to the App.

  • Location is not required for local control.

Remote control

Controllers can be driven remotely provided a gateway has been installed in the home. This gateway handles communication between the internet (IoT Hub and remote App) and the Bluetooth Mesh network.

Communication between the access point (e.g. the home’s internet box) and the gateway is over WiFi.
